GENERATIONS OF GIVING Remer Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.

In 1955, Robert (Bob) R. Remer, Sr. formed Remer Plumbing & Heating Company. In 1957, when Dick Katz was just 24 years old, he began a partnership with the late Bob Remer that was to become Remer Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. (Remer). Upon Bob Remer's retirement in 1990, Katz became President of the company. He wakes at the crack of dawn, arrives at his office by 7:00 a.m. every day and, in 54 years, has not missed a day of work.

charitygolfKatz has kept his business a family affair. His son, Mark, serves as Vice President of the company's Commercial Division, while three of his daughters, a son-in-law and grandson are also employed by the company. Bob Remer's sons, Bob and Dave, both serve as Vice Presidents of the Residential Division of the company, and two additional Remer children are also employed by the Residential Division.

Over the years, Katz has built the company up from solely residential work to include large commercial projects - including prisons, hospitals, and schools throughout the state. For
many years, Remer has been involved in various projects with nearly all St. Mary's of Michigan facilities, from Saginaw to Standish and West Branch to Tawas.

The Katz family has always had an affinity to St. Mary's of Michigan. Dick's wife of 57 years, Kay, gave birth to all seven of their children at St. Mary's. Dick has served on both the Advisory Board and the Foundation Board and was instrumental in the construction of the original GreenHouse Center of HOPE (formerly GreenHouse Gathering Place), the hospital's community resource center for Saginaw County residents in need.

Katz, who provided all of their materials and labor at cost to the original project and rallied additional contractors to help, was thrilled about the recent $1.2 million GreenHouse expansion. He is proud to have been an integral part of the establishment of a program that has become such a critical support network for so many area residents.

Remer is also a generous annual sponsor of both the St. Mary's of Michigan Foundation Cornette Ball and Charity Golf Classic. Both Katz and son, Mark, say that they enjoy both events because of the wonderful people they meet each year. When asked why he chooses to give to St. Mary's of Michigan, he humbly says, "Because I came from a poor family and have been blessed with a successful business and good people who work here." He says the 60+ people who work for him are the reason for his success. "We take good care of them and they take good care of us. We couldn't make it on our own," says Katz.

That is the same philosophy he lives by when it comes to caring for his hometown of Saginaw. We are so grateful for partners like Remer Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning who are aligned with St. Mary's of Michigan's Mission - to care for everyone, everyday, with special attention to the poor and vulnerable. St. Mary's of Michigan Foundation knows that we could not accomplish that without the community support of individuals and businesses, like Remer and the Katz family. Remer is located at 5565 State Street in Saginaw. For more information about Remer, visit www.remerplumbing.com.
